What is the Ledger Wallet?
Ledger Wallet is the name for Ledger’s all-in-one crypto app, which was previously known as Ledger Live. The renaming from Ledger Live to Ledger Wallet was done to reduce confusion and change the mindset of how people understand digital ownership.
The Ledger Wallet app serves as a central hub for managing your digital assets and is Ledger’s Web3 gateway.
Core functions and role in the ledger ecosystem
Ledger Wallet works seamlessly and securely with Ledger Signers (hardware devices such as the Ledger Nano Gen5). The app handles the day-to-day tasks, while the ledger signer serves as the final approval step.
The main functions of Ledger Wallet include
- Asset management: The app allows you to manage, send, receive, buy, sell, swap and stake cryptocurrencies. It supports over 10,000 coins and tokens.
- Account and device management: You can manage different Ledger devices in Ledger Wallet and add accounts for supported cryptocurrencies (such as Bitcoin and Ethereum).
- Security: Every action initiated in the Ledger Wallet app is protected by the uncompromising security of your Ledger Signer. The Wallet app is the place where you can use the Transaction Check function, which analyzes transactions for potential threats before you sign them on the device.
New functions in Ledger Wallet
With the introduction of the Ledger Nano Gen5, new functions have been integrated into Ledger Wallet:
- Direct dApp connectivity (Web3 Gateway): Ledger Wallet now enables direct connectivity to decentralized applications (dApps), eliminating the need for browser extensions. This reduces the number of “moving parts” and reduces the risk of being deceived. One partner that uses this seamless integration is 1inch.
- Cash-to-stablecoin / salary payments: Through a partnership with Noah, users can link their bank account or salary directly to their ledger wallet to convert fiat currencies into stablecoins (e.g. USDC) without exchange or fees. This makes it possible to earn or spend money directly in the ledger wallet, free from intermediaries.
Overall, Ledger Live has evolved into Ledger Wallet because it is far more than just a portfolio tracker; it is the one-stop shop where secure interactions meet meaningful opportunities.
