Ledger Nano Gen5 Description 2025
The Ledger Nano Gen5 was presented at the Ledger Op3n event in Paris and marks the launch of the fifth generation of the Ledger Nano device series. The publication took place on October 23, 2025. With a non-binding retail price of 179,00 $ (click here to check the current price), this device brings Ledger touchscreen technology to a lower price segment for the first time. The Nano Gen5 is positioned as the most accessible and effortless touchscreen signer in Ledger’s product range. But what does “signer” mean?
The paradigm shift: from hardware wallet to signer
With the introduction of the Gen5, Ledger has made a terminological shift: The devices are now referred to as “signers” instead of “hardware wallets”. Ledger believes that the term “hardware wallet” is outdated and misleading.
The reason for the new name: The actual task of the device is to store the private keys offline and securely and to authorize and sign transactions or digital decisions. The assets themselves are always stored on the blockchain. The term “signer” reflects the active and broader role of the device, which goes beyond mere storage.
In the course of this renaming, the accompanying software Ledger Live was also renamed Ledger Wallet, which now serves as an all-in-one crypto app and Web3 gateway and works seamlessly with the Signer.
The new design of the Gen5 Signer
The Gen5 has a 2.76 inch E-Ink monochrome touch display (300 x 400 px) with scratch-resistant glass. This offers improved clarity and intuitive control compared to the older Nano models with tiny screens and physical buttons.
The device supports connectivity via USB-C, Bluetooth and NFC. The battery life is designed for up to 10 hours of intermittent use.
To achieve the lower price point, the housing was made entirely of plastic. This keeps the device light and pocket-friendly, but it can be perceived as less “premium” in direct comparison with the metal or Gorilla Glass cases of the Flex and Stax. Another technical compromise of the E Ink display is the lack of a backlight; the signer is therefore not visible or usable in the dark.
Personalization through Ledger Nano Gen5 badges
The Ledger Nano Gen5 badges are an accessory that serves to visually personalize the signer. They were designed exclusively by the legendary graphic designer Susan Kare, who is known for her work on the original Macintosh icons.
The badges are small, playful aluminum badges (0.6 g weight) that can be quickly and easily attached to the Nano Gen5 using a small opening. They are available in packs of 3 and feature different motifs (such as a frog with a crown, a rubber ducky or a lucky horseshoe). Please note that the badges are sold separately.
The technology behind the safety and operation of the Nano Gen5
The Ledger Nano Gen5 provides the same high level of security as the flagship Flex and Stax models.
Core security and protection mechanisms
The heart of the Nano Gen5 is the CC EAL6+ Secure Element Chip. This tamper-proof chip, the same type used in bank cards and electronic passports, is designed to isolate the private keys and protect them from extraction attempts by remote or physical attacks.

An important feature is the certified secure screen. This screen is directly connected to the Secure Element, which ensures that the transaction details displayed cannot be manipulated by a general processor. The security principle “What You See Is What You Sign” is thus guaranteed.
Other features
Modern functions are integrated to support daily use and prevent fraud.
On the one hand, there is clear signing. As a result, transaction details are shown on the display in understandable language, which reduces the risk of costly errors when interacting with smart contracts.
Another new feature is the Transaction Check: a recently introduced function that analyzes Ethereum transactions for potential threats before the user signs. This function warns of known bad addresses or suspicious contracts, which significantly minimizes the risk of inadvertently approving malicious smart contracts.
Included with the Nano Gen5 is the Ledger Recovery Key, a PIN-protected digital backup card that provides an additional, secure recovery option.
The Ledger Nano Gen5 compared to the product line
The Nano Gen5 is Ledger’s most affordable touchscreen option. It offers the same core safety as the Flex and the Stax, but differs in terms of material, display quality and extended functions.
