What distinguishes the Ledger Gen5 from other hardware wallets?

The Ledger Nano Gen5 stands out from other hardware wallets, especially the more expensive touchscreen models Ledger Flex and Ledger Stax, primarily due to its positioning and price, as it offers touchscreen technology at an entry-level price of €179. Ledger is also making a conceptual shift with the launch of the Gen5 by no longer referring to the device as a “hardware wallet” but as a “secure crypto signer” to clarify the device’s role in secure private key storage and digital authorization. Compared to the premium hardware wallets, the main differences can be found in the construction and design: The Gen5 uses a plastic casing and is therefore lighter and more pocket-friendly, while Flex and Stax use metal. Although the Gen5 has the same 2.8-inch display size as the Flex, it uses a monochrome (pure black and white) E Ink TFT display with a lower resolution (300 x 400 px) and scratch-resistant glass, as opposed to the Flex’s higher-resolution 16-grayscale E Ink display and Gorilla Glass. To keep the price low, the Gen5 lacks premium features such as Qi wireless charging. Despite these savings in materials, the Gen5 offers the same world-class security, including the CC EAL6+ Secure Element Chip, and supports all modern security features such as Clear Signing and the new Transaction Check function for analyzing potential threats to Ethereum transactions. It also enables direct connection to dApps via the renamed Ledger Wallet app without the need for browser extensions, simplifying the workflow and reducing the risk of fraud. For personalization, users can attach interchangeable badges designed by Susan Kare. The Gen5 also comes with the Ledger Recovery Key, a PIN-protected digital backup card that enables secure recovery of the seed phrase.
