Hardware wallets usually generate a so-called HD wallet. This means that a kind of hash or seed is generated, from which an infinite number of key pairs can be generated for each cryptocurrency. So you don’t just have a private key, but countless ones that all come out of your seed. These are safely stored on the hardware wallet and cannot be accessed by anyone. Often stored in a protected area of a microcontroller. They cannot be transferred from the device in plain text.
